Peter had paused in his rambling, waiting on Mr Stark to respond and starting to worry when he didn't-and then that hand on his cheek made things suddenly click into place.
"It's me, Mr Stark! Really!" He assured the man before being pulled into a tight hug which he was happy to return. "That's-this is nice." He stated before having his life threatened and then hugged again.
"I didn't mean to! And how I was I supposed to know it was actually only gonna send me to an alternate universe? And oh my god, Mr Stark! Wait until you see! It's bigger on the inside!"
"Hey no!" The Doctor suddenly turned to the reunion again.
"What?" Peter glanced back at the man.
"You spoiled it." He was near pouting. "That's the best part-you can't just tell someone the best part!"
"Sorry, he likes when people say that bit-Bigger on the inside." A short woman with dark hair and Lancaster accent stepped out of the box as well. "Hello, I'm Clara."
"What's bigger?" Tony asked, finally getting his head around the fact Peter was alive and okay. The rest of the world was gradually coming back into view now. There was some weird guy who had said he was a doctor or something and now there was a lady coming out of that box that looked like.. what exactly was that? "Who are you again? Alternate un.. really?"
Okay, wait, give him a minute. He looked at Peter again and yes, his not!son was still okay. This wasn't a hallucination. He didn't think at least. Some of those could be pretty severe from what he'd read. "So.. all the others are safe too?"
"Clara. Clara Oswald." Clara offered her name again and then gestured over to the Time Lord. "This is the Doctor. He can probably explain what's going on way better than I can." she conceded, though she did know quite a bit.
"Yes. They're safe-well as safe as anyone can be right now-what with both our universes set to collapse at possibly any minute. There's a reason you can't travel between universes-it punctures holes into the fabric of reality." The Doctor draped his arm around Clara's shoulders.
"So, I'm here to take you all back to your Earth. That being said-we'll reconvene in the TARDIS." He gestured to his box.
Peter just nodded his head vigorously, bound and determined not to spoil it a second time.
"C'mon Mr Stark, you really have to see inside-it's-" he pauses a moment, trying to find a word that wouldn't get the Doctor on him about spoilers again. "It's amazing.
Tony looked from each of their faces till he was back to Peter's. With more effort than it should take, he got to his feet and followed them into the box that was apparently called a Tardis. "Why a police box?" If he was going to use something as a space ship, he wasn't sure he'd use something that looked like a phone booth.
However, he was also just as convinced he was having an aneurysm or mental breakdown. None of this could be real, could it? He put a hand on Peter's shoulder and gave a light squeeze. It sure felt real, but it couldn't. Peter had died. Was his mind really clever enough to copy this much of Peter's mannerisms?
"What do you mean our worlds could collapse? What..." He trailed off as he stepped into such a tiny looking thing into the inside of the Tardis. It really was bigger on the inside. "I need a drink."
"Well, that's the beauty of the TARDIS." The Doctor started. "She can disguise herself as literally anything in the world to seamlessly blend into her surroundings." He paused, the amusement somewhat fading from his voice. "And then she disguised herself as a police box 1963. And never really changed. The chameleon circuit's stuck actually-I've been meaning to get that fixed." He pointed a finger at Tony, shaking it slightly to indicate his point as he moved towards the console.
Once everyone was in, the doors shut on their own and The Doctor immediately set about punching buttons and pulling levers on the console.
"Alright, so where is your Earth, eh? Same place as Clara's?" He muttered to himself, setting the TARDIS to scan for Earth.
"You get used to it." Clara told Tony, more attentive to his shock than the Doctor obviously was. "It's a bit much at first-mind you, the first time he dragged me in here there was a plane threatening to crash into us. I'll walk you to the kitchen-I could do with a good cuppa."
"I'll take one!" The Doctor called from what he was doing.
"And if you need something stronger than tea, there's probably some of that, too." Clara seemingly ignored the Doctor.
Peter was practically bouncing on his heels as he waited for Mr Stark to see the inside of the TARDIS, having to practically restrain himself from blurting out the obvious.
"See, Mr Stark? Isn't it awesome? it's actually bigger on the inside!" He stated, clearly excited enough for the both of them.
Nebula glanced around the ship suspiciously. Of all the things she'd expected to find on the inside-this didn't make the list. She was impressed in her own way, eyes darting about with a slight frown on her blue face.
"You said both our Universes could collapse." She hadn't forgotten that bit either. "Explain."
"Ooh! Uh-I can explain!" Peter was still practically bouncing. "Okay so-uh-how the Doctor explained it to me back in the other universe is like this-so uh... between each universe there's like this space called the void and it kinda acts like a wall between universes and when someone travels between universes it punches a hole in that wall. One or two holes is fine but too many and the walls kinda collapses in on each other and the two universes bleed together-right, Doctor?" Peter looked over at the Time Lord to affirm he'd explained it correctly.
"Uh yeah, basically." The Time Lord nodded. "You left out the bit where both universes get sucked into the void and then time and reality will cease to exist-but yeah. Essentially."
"Well don't fix that on my account. It just isn't very 'disguised', especially on a deserted planet- or moon or whatever we were just on." His head hurt. He turned his attention to the sane one- Clara. She seemed much more reasonable. Although he did frown again at the Doctor asking 'which Earth' they were from. How was he supposed to know?
Still half convinced he was having a break from his senses, he expected his Earth to be made of mayo or gum drops. He wanted to tell Peter to 'walk and talk' to explain what was going on, but the kid was just so excited he couldn't get a word in. It would be annoying normally, but right about now he was so grateful to have Peter back the young man could do no wrong. Wait what was he saying again?
"Lovely. So.. isn't this something Thor should be dealing with? He's the god-alien." He held up a hand before Peter could say anything. "That was a joke, where's the booze. That's what I need first."
That is the precise reason the Doctor generally has a companion with him-they help him with other people. It takes a special kind of person to deal with anyone as old and eccentric as the Doctor is. He sort of gets wrapped up in the moment a bit too much and forgets to let people adjust before crashing into their lives and turning them upside down.
"Thor?" The Doctor frowned. "As in from Norse Mythology?" He asked before immediately becoming distracted again. "Aha! There it is! Earth 616-universe 616. That's interesting. Anyways-looks like it's about four degrees to the left of where Clara's Earth usually is."
"Usually? My Earth doesn't move." Clara pointed out.
"Yes it does-or it did. But that's been sorted and sort of got erased from time so never mind that." The Doctor waved her off as she rolled her eyes.
"Right then, to the kitchen." Clara stated, heading towards the back of the console room. "Peter, did you want to come along? I can make you some hot chocolate, if you'd like."
"Yeah!" Peter agreed with a vigorous nod, still practically bouncing as he moved to follow after Clara.
"Anyways, Mr Stark. I think the Doctor is like exactly who he need to help us fix this- I mean I've known him for less than a day but he talks a lot and apparently he's from some planet called Gallifrey and says he's a Time Lord-whatever that is."
"Oh don't let him fool you-it's just his species." Clara cut in as they moved away from the console room. "But he does have quite an impressive resume when it comes to saving the universe-I wasn't there for all of it."
Tony would've answered that question but the moment was over and really, the less said about that Norse moron the better. (Read 'Norse moron' with a bit of fondness to it.)
"Why didn't it move?" Tony asked, following Clara, glad she thought to make Peter come along. As in, move around a solar system or some other kind of 'move'?"
"Oh great, another fact Lord," Tony grumbled hearing about Time Lords. "What was it that guy who was with her called himself?" He gestured towards Nebula. He didn't remember her name either.
"Starlord!" Peter's all too happy to supply. "He's like a space pirate!"
"No idea." Clara answered with a shrug. "As far as I know the Earth-my Earth's not moved aside from your typical spinning around the sun. Sometimes he says things that I think he's gotta be making up but then again I've seen enough to know he's probably not. And he's got this annoying ability to remember timelines that have rewritten themselves, so who knows." She shrugged as she stopped outside a door and waited for it to open up on its own, which it does after about five seconds.
"My guess is that the Doctor's planning on rewriting time in your universe-make sure this Thanos never has the chance to do... what he did."
"It's a time machine, Mr Stark! Can you believe it, it's an actual Time Machine and does this thing where-" At that precise moment, the whole ship lurches suddenly, sending anyone that's not holding onto something, pitching to the floor.
Okay, someone was feeling overwhelmed and that didn't put him in the best of moods. He might be a grumpy thinking he'd lost his mind too. However, things were just feeling a little too real for a psychotic dream. Would he be able to tell the difference?
He was still mulling over what Clara said when Peter pipes up again sounding cheerful and amazed. It did his heart good to hear that boy's voice. It sounded real and alive. He was opening his mouth to say something but the next thing he knew, he was being thrown to the ground and hitting his head against one of the walls. He winced at the impact, but it wasn't hard enough to knock him out- just see a few stars. "What the hell was that?" He growled. When Peter wasn't in his immediate view (simply because he wasn't turned the right way) he felt a rush of fear flood through him. "Kid? Peter!"
Peter, having the benefit of super sticky powers and a damn near perfect equilibrium, wasn't fully knocked to the ground merely almost lost his balance.
"Oh my god! Mr Stark! Are you okay?" Peter stood up straight and moved over to help his mentor. "It's okay-I'm right here. I'm fine." he assured when he realized the near panic in Tony's voice.
Clara made a noise as she got up from where she'd fallen on the floor. "Sorry. I knew there'd be a jolt but it's not usually that violent. It's how the TARDIS works-how it travels-I should've warned you."
The ringing in his ears made it difficult to hear Peter, but then the boy came into his line of vision as he was helped up. It took just about everything he had to keep from wrapping Peter in a tight hold again and never letting him go this time.
He finally acknowledged Clara after a moment, not caring that it was rude he hadn't helped her up off the floor. "If that was just from it launching, will it be that bad or worse when we land?"
Before Clara has the chance to answer, the TARDIS lurches again but this time, Peter was sort of ready for it, he made sure stay upright and held onto Tony's arm so he wouldn't fall over again-he'd help Clara but Tony was the one with a stab wound. "You okay, Mr Stark? I mean-I know I just asked that but that was before the second jolt so uh..."
"Guess so." Clara stated, having steadied herself on the wall. "He could've at least warned us he was going to move the TARDIS." She grumbled and headed further into the kitchen. Somehow, miraculously, nothing in the overstocked kitchen had fallen over. Clara gestured to what looked like a very old cabinet.
"Booze is in there-The Doctor doesn't really like alcohol-and can you imagine him drunk? But he has a friend he sees sometimes that does drink so he keeps it on hand."
It was a little embarrassing having himself be tossed around so easily by the ship, he was grateful Peter was there to steady him that second time. Well, he was grateful Peter was there for all sorts of reasons other than that too.
"Yeah, thanks kid." He gave the young man a reassuring smile and patted his arm. He stayed close as they continued into the kitchen just in case. He goes for the cabinet and pulled out one bottle with amber colored liquid inside. He picked up one of the glasses and filled it with several shorts worth. "So this Doctor fellow.. who is he really? What is he doing? You said he goes around saving universes. How does he do that?"
Peter gently lets Tony go as he moves for the liquor and once he's sure he won't just fall over. Peter just offers a small grin and tiny salute to his mentor before moving off to help Clara with whatever.
"Well he's... The Doctor." Clara stated after a moment, knowing exactly how unhelpful that sounded. "He's an alien from another planet called a Timelord-the very last of the Timelords. He lost his planet in a war and now I think he's trying to make up for it by keep all the other planets and universes safe." She filled a tea kettle with water and set it on the stove top.
"Mostly, he just talks. He loves talking-to anybody and anything. And he this way of making you feel like you're the most important person in all of creation-he treats everyone like that."
